Nourishing Architecture Jane Jacobs Walk: Portland, Oregon

Portland’s vibrant food and coffee culture is on full display in the downtown area. It’s more than cutting-edge cuisine and world-renowned java, though. The buildings that house these enterprises reveal clues about not only the owners and patrons, but how we want to feel about ourselves as Portlanders.

Our walk will examine a mix of the old and the new, the formal and the casual. We will try to show that, as much as filling our physical need for food and drink, downtown Portland’s bars, restaurants and coffee shops fill our emotional need for surroundings that speak to our nature as Pacific Northwesterners, as Oregonians, and as people.

The Draw at Sugar House: Salt Lake City

Join us in celebrating the new sections of Parley’s Trail along with The Draw, an artistic passageway under 1300 East! Designed by world renowned environmental artist, Patricia Johanson, The Draw is intended as a beautiful public space with historical and cultural elements. It will also serve as a safe crossing of 1300 East connecting Sugar House Park with the Sugar House Business District. It is a crucial element of Parley’s Trail, which will provide an 8 mile east-west link for the Salt Lake Valley. The trail is now completed from 1700 East to 1300 East in Sugar House Park, and from McClelland Street (1050 East) to State Street alongside the S-Line Streetcar.  This totals 2.5 miles of paved shared use trail connecting homes, businesses, and parks in our
communities.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for The Draw starts at 10:30am and includes a few speakers. The Jane Jacobs Walk will follow and we will be some of the first people to walk through the tunnel under 1300 East. After this, we will tour the proposed route of Parley’s Trail in the Sugar House Business District. Lastly, we will explore the trail alongside the SLine Streetcar to 700 East, where we will turn and walk back. Parley’s Rails Trails and Tunnels Coalition, a nonprofit organization, will lead the walk and provide information and talking points along the way. We welcome open discussion in the form of questions, comments, concerns, and recommendations for the trail and The Draw. Learn more at www.parleystrail.org and find us on social media under Parley’s Trail.

There will be two Walk options: a shorter walk through the neighborhood, and a longer Walk all the way to the University of Indianapolis.

On Wednesday, May 7, neighbors, students, and other community stakeholders will walk south to explore ways to connect with the University of Indianapolis through commercial development, walkability and bikeability.

When you think of a city you like, what comes to mind? Can a city be a work of art? How do parked cars serve pedestrians? Most of the interaction among people, bikes, and cars is unplanned. How does that happen? Why do people gather in some places and avoid others? Is it possible to create a neighborhood from the ground up? What is a “public space”? How can the design of public space promote or retard social interaction?

The beautiful and historic neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights offers excellent examples of Jane Jacobs’s principles of urban diversity in action. Beginning at the steps of Brooklyn’s Borough Hall, we will stroll through residential and commercial streets while observing and talking about how the physical environment influences social activity and even economic and cultural development, both for good and for ill. We will be stopping at several points of interest, including the famous Promenade, and end near the #2/3 subway and a nice coffeehouse.

Join Newtown Creek Alliance Historian Mitch Waxman for an intense exploration of Newtown Creek’s Greenpoint and Hunters Point neighborhoods, walking along the East River and over the Newtown Creek.

A colonial center and 19th century industrial powerhouse, Greenpoint is a thriving neighborhood cursed by environmental catastrophe. Explore this ancient North Brooklyn neighborhood, and learn its incredible industrial history, while moving inexorably toward the Newtown Creek. The tour will cross Newtown Creek via the Pulaski Bridge and head into the brave new world and Modern Corridor of Long Island City’s Hunters Point. There will be spectacular waterfront vistas to enjoy, maritime industrial and rail infrastructure to marvel at, and along the way – a few surprises will be encountered.

The areas we will be moving through will be, and are being, completely altered by real estate development. Come take a look at what was before everything changes.

Meetup at 11 a.m. on Saturday in front of St. Anthony’s RC Church on Greenpoint Avenue at the corner of Milton Street in Greenpoint. Check MTA.info, the morning of, for best transit directions to get there. We will be ending the walk in Long Island City. Bring your camera, as the tour will be revealing an incredible landscape along this highly populated section of the troubled Newtown Creek Watershed.

Be prepared for rough terrain and possible heavy truck traffic. Dress and pack appropriately for hiking and for weather. Closed-toe shoes are highly recommended. Bathroom opportunities will be found only at the start of the walk. We will be ending in LIC, nearby several mass transit hubs.

Please join us for a free walking tour to explore, observe, and share stories about the Orchard Street neighborhood north of Porter Square, renowned as the longtime residence of House Speaker Thomas “Tip” O’Neill. Its single- and multi-family dwellings–with their delightful and varied vernacular styles–demonstrate the evolution of suburban living from the mid-19th to the early 20th century.

The district’s street layout, between Mass. Ave. in Cambridge and Elm St. and Holland Ave. in Somerville, reflects the changes in transportation, and the street names attest to the entrepreneurial spirit of the people who converted Cambridge and Somerville farmland into a thriving middle-class neighborhood. The cities of Cambridge and Somerville have been studying the area for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

Cambridge Historical Commission staff members Sarah Burks and Charles Sullivan will lead the walk and offer historic background. We will also look to neighborhood residents and other walkers to provide further information and observations.

We’ll walk the streets of downtown Ithaca and discuss the history and character of the area.  We will unpack Ithaca’s history and the history of place-making to better understand how Ithaca fits into national trends and changes in thinking over the years.  We will question which changes have been successful and which have been failures/taken away from city life?  Finally we will discuss, measure and experience several factors that influence a streetscape: creating public spaces that are engaging places where people want to be or are undesirable where people feel uncomfortable or uninterested in lingering.

Our route will take us West along the commons, South on Home Dairy Alley, West on Green, North on Cayuga, East on Seneca

City to Creek: Exploring Nature Everywhere- Salt Lake City

Jai Hamid Bashir and Sean Goss, members of the Natural Leaders community through the Children & Nature Network, will lead this Walk. As trained Natural Leaders who attended the Natural Leaders Legacy Camp in Bainbridge Island, Washington in the Fall of 2013, we are hoping to utilize the tools and visions we gleaned from this camp to help children and youth of the Salt Lake Valley to get outdoors for the Children & Nature Network’s “Let’s G.O.” initiative.

Our effort is to put together an event that combines the mission of the late and esteemed urban ecologist and social thinker, Jane Jacobs, and children and nature. Our hope is by hosting this event we can expand our community’s ideas and vocabulary about nature and the environment, and help illustrate that being outdoors can be fun, insightful, and meaningful through a three-pronged vision of explore, observe, and connect.

A “share-out” will be a way for participants to share their observations, feelings and ideas as the walk progresses. It is also a time for reflection on the what, why, how, and when.

We will have group introductions through a very quick and easy ice-breaker, groups will be organized, student leaders assigned, and agenda explained. Sean and Jai will introduce themselves, and go through safety and expectations. An introduction of the “exploration” aspect will be quickly discussed. Student leaders will then ask participants to explore by taking pictures, collecting non-organic materials, and discussing the place (geography, weather, initial reactions). A portion of the walk will focus on using the senses to really absorb the surroundings—natural, organic, inorganic, built and non-built.
