Walks Through History — Marked Tree Historic District

  • 11 Fisco St. Marked Tree, Arkansas Marked Tree, Arkansas (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Marked Tree is located between the St. Francis and Little rivers in the area known as the “sunken lands,” which was created by the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811-1812. The town supposedly acquired its name from an oak tree on the bank of the Little River that was marked with an “M” in the 1830s by John Murrell’s gang of outlaws. Marked Tree prospered after the completion in 1883 of the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Gulf Railroad (later the Frisco). By the 1890s, the timber industry dominated the local economy. The region was plagued by frequent flooding, and in response to the devastating Flood of 1927, the Corps of Engineers constructed the Marked Tree Lock & Siphons in the late 1930s to control flooding and provide transportation along the St. Francis River. Better flood control methods allowed farmers to grow more crops, including cotton, corn, soybeans and rice. Co-sponsored by the Marked Tree Chamber of Commerce. Meet at the Farmers and Merchants Bank and Trust Building (Poinsett County Drainage District No. 7 Office) at 11 Frisco St.

Walks Through History — Whittington Park Historic District in Hot Springs

Whittington Park Historic District in Hot Springs. Located northwest of Bathhouse Row in Hot Springs, the Whittington Park neighborhood contains good examples of Queen Anne, Craftsman and Ranch-style homes. The residential area developed around Whittington Lake Reserve Park, which was constructed in the 1890s by the U.S. Department of the Interior as part of an extensive building and landscaping program for the Hot Springs Reservation. In the early 20th century, an entertainment district was established west of the park, including an ostrich farm, alligator farm and an amusement park. As the bathing industry grew, more construction occurred around Whittington Park. The neighborhood was home to working-class residents, many of whom worked in nearby hotels, bathhouses and restaurants. Co-sponsored by the Whittington Valley Neighborhood Association and the Garland County Historical Society. Meet in front of the Dryden Ouachita Mountain Pottery Plant at 341 Whittington Ave.

Walks Through History–Pine Bluff Commercial Historic District

The “Walks through History” tour series features historic sites or districts around Arkansas each month. The tours are free and open to the public. Tours begin at 11:00 a.m., unless otherwise indicated, and last between one and two hours. An AHPP historian delivers a lecture about the properties while leading guests on a walking tour.

Pine Bluff was so named because it was the first bluff above the mouth of the Arkansas River and was covered with pine trees. The Jefferson County seat prospered as a steamboat port and later because of the railroads. The Cotton Belt Railroad built its shops and a car-making facility in Pine Bluff, quickly making it the largest employer in the city. Railroads enabled residents to ship the area’s valuable cotton and timber resources to larger markets. During World War II, the U.S. Army constructed the Pine Bluff Arsenal north of town to produce munitions and chemical agents. Today Pine Bluff is the largest city in southeast Arkansas and is home to the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The buildings in the historic district reflect Pine Bluff’s status as a regional commercial hub during the 19th and 20th centuries. Co-sponsored by the Pine Bluff Historic District Commission and the Pine Bluff/Jefferson County Historical Museum. Meet at the Jefferson County Courthouse at Main & Barraque streets.

Dark Age Ahead – The Wizard of O’Farrell Jane Jacobs Walk

Dark Age Ahead – The Wizard of O’Farrell Jane Jacobs Walk

Jane Jacobs writing in Dark Age Ahead, identified five pillars of our culture that we depend on but which are in serious decline:

Community and Family
Higher Education
The Effective Practice of Science
Taxation and Government
Self-policing by Learned Professions

The decay of these pillars, Jacobs contended, was behind such ills as environmental crisis, racism and the growing gulf between rich and poor; their continued degradation could lead us into a new Dark Age, a period of cultural collapse in which all that keeps a society alive and vibrant is forgotten.
This walk will tie in ideas discussed in Jane’s last book she published before she died, Dark Age Ahead as seen through the lens of downtown San Francisco Neighborhoods.
Please join this walk.
And maybe, just maybe you might meet The Wizard of O’Farrell Street !

Time: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Event Start/End:

Walk Begins : In front of The Twitter Building’s Main Entrance, 1355 Market Street

This tour, led by MacArthur “genius” Fellow and Peabody Award winning radio host of ThePromisedLand.org, Majora Carter, will take participants through the streets of her youth as folks learn about what it all looked like when the neighborhood was built, when it burned, and how it is still rebuilding before our eyes today.

Special attention will be paid to the 5-acre Spofford juvenile detention facility – built in 1959, and closed in 2011. As an extension of the experience, you are invited to attend Memories of the Future at 4:00 PM

MCG has co-sponsored this community led theater project involving an inter-generational group of people whose live were in some way affected by the Spofford Juvenile Detention facility.
Some members of this group were inmates of, or workers inside Spofford,or local residents, or someone they loved was in there.

For the past 10 weeks, they have met every Monday 6:30pm-9pm with Theater of the Oppressed artistic coaches, and multi-media director Melanie Crean to explore their experiences and feelings about Spofford.

Now, they are ready to show a live audience what they’ve learned, and invite audience members to react & contribute as part of the performances.

The observations gleaned from these 2 unique theatrical events will go on to inform and influence how the 5-acre Spofford site will be re-developed in the future.

In the first weekend of May each year, people around the nation host walks in honor of Jane Jacobs, who prevented highways from carving up Manhattan and Toronto — and is arguably America’s most famed urbanist.

This year’s “Jane Jacobs Walk: Phoenix” – hosted by Will Novak, board president of the Phoenix Historic Neighborhoods Coalition – will explore the history and urban characteristics of Adams Street, which is currently being reviewed by the City of Phoenix and its consultants for an “”activation project.””

There will be opportunities during the walk to enjoy a drink refreshment and converse with other walkers about our downtown.

Jane Jacobs Walk in Iowa City

  • Pedestrian Mall in downtown Iowa City. (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The neighborhoods immediately north and east of downtown Iowa City contain an array of lovely older buildings, many of which are included in the College Green and (newly-created) Jefferson Street Historic Preservation Districts. But these neighborhoods are also facing increasing development pressure, which has resulted in the construction (and planned construction) of several new multi-story mixed-use buildings. Whether these changes will contribute positively to the long-term prosperity and vitality of the city has recently been a topic of considerable public debate. Participants on the tour will be encouraged to see the neighborhoods and debate through Jane Jacobs’ eyes, and to draw upon her thinking to suggest alterations that would make the neighborhoods into even more attractive, diverse, and livable places.

The beautiful and historic neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights offers excellent examples of Jane Jacobs’s principles of urban diversity in action. Beginning at the steps of Brooklyn¹s Borough Hall, we will stroll through residential and commercial streets while observing and talking about how the physical environment influences social activity and even economic and cultural development, both for good and for ill. We will be stopping at several points of interest, including the famous Promenade, and end near the #2/3 subway and a nice coffeehouse.

Please wear comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing, and be sure to have lots of questions. See you there!
