Come explore downtown Salt Lake City! Walkable Salt Lake is hosting mobile workshops on October 23rd, 26th, and 27th.

On a walking tour of Salt Lake City’s laneways, alleys, and mid-block walkways, we will uncover hidden treasures and a finer-grained pedestrian network. What makes these places special and how can we expose their charming, intimate atmospheres? Stimulate your creativity and help us reimagine Salt Lake City’s mid-block walkways!

The River District Banner Walk will begin and end at The Sorenson Unity Center 1383 S. 900 W. and will be concurrent with the Eco-Art Celebration held there from 4:00 – 6:00 pm.  The tour will celebrate the unveiling of the Children’s Banner Art Competition for The River District.

This self-guided tour will enable the walker to see all the winners of the River District Children’s Banner Coloring Competition, which will be printed and hung on Salt Lake City’s west side.

Jane Jacobs Walk to Find the Hidden Philmont Treasures Hunt / Philmont Community Day

Participants will be given a list of Philmont’s hidden treasure hunt clues – of which the answers will be based purely on observation skills during the walk. There will be up to 20 clues provided.

The Jane Jacobs Walk to Find Philmont’s Hidden Treasures Walk will gently amble through the Village Green, visiting the historic Tea House, walk the Philmont Labyrinth, then head up Maple Avenue which is full of historic 19th century homes, down Prospect St. towards the Harder Mansion, up Main St, turn right on Elm St and continue up to the Summit Mill and Summit Lake. The walk will continue along Lake Drive, down Ark St, turn right onto Main St. and continue up to the Vanderbilt House to end the walk – where refreshments and conversation can be enjoyed sitting on the outside dining deck overlooking the Summit Lake.

For those of us who are more energetic – the walk can continue by circling back down the Main St. to visit the Columbia Land Conservancy High Falls nature trails.

There will be a cap of 25 for the Jane Jacobs Walk to Find the Hidden Philmont Treasures Hunt on Philmont Community Day. No cap for participants for the treasure hunt component. This component does not require the participant to join in the walk and can be self directed.

Jane Jacobs Walk is proud to promote WalkDenver’s first Better Block initiative. Better Block Jefferson Park will take place on Saturday, June 23rd, 2012 in the old business district of Jefferson Park— on 25th Ave, between Federal and Eliot.

Cities around the U.S. are looking for tools to help redevelop communities that enable multi-modal transportation while increasing economic development, and reducing carbon emissions. The “Better Block” project is a demonstration tool that acts as a living charrette so that communities can actively engage in the buildout process and provide feedback in real time.

Join the Young Architect’s Forum (YAF) to explore the Granary District. In the spirit of Jane Jacobs, participants will stroll through this dynamic urban village, stopping to tour local highlights and hear the stories of residents, designers and business owners.

The evening kicks off at 6:00pm at Artspace Commons (800 S @ 400 W), where there’ll be a display of architecture projects focused on the Granary District. From there, The Young Architects Forum, in collaboration with SLC Green Drinks, will be hosting a tour of the District (what folks in the know call a “Jane’s Walk”), featuring local businesses and highlighting what’s going right in the neighborhood.

At the heart of it all, is the block party — from 5–8pm — with street performers, food trucks, and live music.

Then, when the sun sets, join us at Frida Bistro — where Local DJs and photographers will showcase a performance peice featuring Granary District images accompanied by sound. And, of course, there’ll be Frida’s incomparable tapas, margaritas, and mexican lagers.

Join GVSHP staff member Dana Schulz as she takes you on a journey through the East Village, peeling back the layers of the cultural gastronomy scene that have made this neighborhood so eclectic (and delicious!) over the years. Explore how immigrant groups established restaurants to serve their own community as well as share their heritage with the uninitiated. Learn the little-known facts that make these spots famous and infamous and discover how the emerging food scene of today reflects the changing culture of the neighborhood. Tracing the Path of Jane Jacobs’ Greenwich Village Battles

We will follow the route of Jane’s involvement in 3 battles against Robert Moses: The road through Washington Square Park, SoHo which the Lower Manhattan Expressway would have wiped out with Little Italy and Chinatown, and then West Village Houses where Moses wanted to demolish 14 square blocks for an Urban Renewal Plan.

Winooski Ave Reflections & Burlington Urban Renewal History

This event will have two walks, hosted by the Burlington Walk-Bike Council. The first walk will be down a portion of North Winooski Avenue, from the Old North End into Downtown. Participants will evaluate North Winooski Ave. in terms of pedestrian and bicycle safety and comfort. Everyone’s feedback and ideas will be compiled for use by the Burlington Walk-Bike Council.

A lunch break will include pizza and vegetables, as well as the viewing of an excellent short documentary by Patrick Farrington on the history of urban renewal in Burlington and the demolition of much of Burlington’s historic Italian neighborhood. It includes a number of moving interviews with some of those displaced.

The second walk, after lunch, will go over to the urban renewal area accompanied by some members of the Vermont Italian Club to see where some former homes, businesses, and schools had been located before they were demolished. Some of the Club members lived in this neighborhood as children or young adults, others had relatives living there.

The BROADWAY: 1000 Steps Baton – Canal Street to Bowling Green: The Origins of the City

Community activist and Professor of Planning, Michael Levine, will reveal the rapidly changing demographic and environmental trends of Lower Manhattan, while chair of the CB1 Financial District Committee, Ro Shaffe, will share his deep knowledge of the area’s history that has given way to its current conditions. Wellington Chen, Director of the Chinatown Partnership, will speak about the prolific history of Chinatown area and discuss the current social and environmental challenges of this focal community. Annaline Dinkelmann, founder of Wall Street Walks, will share her knowledge about the history of the Financial District, dating all the way back to Manhattan’s Dutch settlers.

BROADWAY: 1000 Steps is a project by Mary Miss to turn the oldest avenue of NYC into a “green corridor” where insights into our surroundings – from streets and buildings, to transportation and waste, to energy and the climate – can be made apparent and accessible at ground level. This project, to be inaugurated next spring 2013, will be implemented at up to twenty “hubs” dispersed along its length, from the Bronx to the Battery. Each hub will serve as a site for installations that reveal the urban infrastructure, decode the environment and suggest what the future city might be. This project is intended as a catalyst for interventions and projects by other artists, environmental designers, and citizens along Broadway, at additional sites in NYC and cities across the country.

St. Paul Central Corridor Walkability Survey

Jane Jacobs believed strongly that local community members understand best how their neighborhoods work, and what is needed to strengthen them. The District Councils Collaborative of Saint Paul and Minneapolis (DCC) couldn’t agree more. That’s why the first Jane’s Walk in Minneapolis and Saint Paul will kick off a three-week long Walkability Survey of routes to and from Central Corridor light rail stations, which are currently under construction.

To help celebrate the Walkability Kickoff on May 6th, Charles Landry, the internationally renowned authority on urban revitalization, will lead one of the Jane’s Walks and offer informal remarks at the Walkability Survey Reception from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at the Central Corridor Resource Center. Landry will then participate in a weeklong series of events focused on Creating the 21st Century Intercultural and Creative Cities.

The DCC’s Walkability Survey is designed to gather on-the-ground, neighborhood-based information about walking conditions on routes to light rail stations. At the opening day reception, walkers will be encouraged to share what they learned — the good, the bad, and the ugly — and help create a composite map of all the walks taken that day. Information gathered throughout the three weeks of the survey will be used to build momentum for pedestrian realm improvements to provide a safe, accessible, and enjoyable walk for people of all ages and levels of mobility.

Please join us for the Survey Kickoff Walk and Reception on Sunday, May 6th. Community members will be leading survey walks in most of the 18 station areas from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood in Minneapolis to Lowertown Saint Paul. All walks will begin at 2:30 pm. We will continue to update our webpage with information about where group walks will start as they are confirmed. The walks and reception are free. Along the way participants will visit a local park, historic homes, where 8 mile meets the suburbs, a cemetery, a local church, and businesses along the Avenue of Fashion.  We’ll hear from lifelong Detroiters, including members from the city’s first radio patrol, and about life in this corner of Detroit.  Come learn about the best kept secrets in Detroit!

Vin Cipolla, president of the Municipal Art Society (MAS), will guide us from Columbus Circle to Times Square—historic junctions along Broadway where MAS has played a critical role boosting the corridor’s assets. The Times Square Alliance will also be on hand to speak more specifically about Times Square’s cultural relevance and the plans in place to improve the area. Broadway Green Alliance will address its own initiatives regarding greening of the theater district.

Lower Main Street in Tottenville became an important business center in the mid-19th c. with the revitalization of the oyster industry enhanced by the extension of the SI Railroad to Tottenville in 1860. Capt. John Totten, who lived nearby & whose house still stands, built a dock and general store along the waterfront here, and the maritime industries that supported that industry soon flourished. A century later, Main St. remained at the heart of the community’s business district, providing a wide range of services from banking to shoe repair.

Today, the mom-and-pop stores have all but disappeared, and Main St. struggles in tough economic times. What does the future hold for small town centers like Main Street, Tottenville?

Historic Flushing (Queens): Colonists, Quakers, and Tree Nurseries

From the brave English settlers who defied tyrannical Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant in the name of religious tolerance, to the oldest house of worship in New York State, to the terrible sacrifice suffered by Declaration of Independence Signer Francis Lewis, Flushing has seen New York history unfold on its land since the 1600s. Find out where Thomas Jefferson shopped for trees for his beloved Monticello, and where Quaker founder George Fox preached to hundreds under the shade of two grand oak trees, all here in the erstwhile village once called the prettiest on Long Island.

Sense the energy and ambition that has spurred an incredibly dynamic and fascinating area, tucked away between Tramway Plaza and Sutton Square and dominated by the iconic Queensboro Bridge. The zone grew as a rough and ragged district of power plants, breweries and tenements, until a bevy of society ladies transformed a tenement block into an exclusive enclave that set off a local apartment house boom. Explore this well defined former village of Westchester County that retains many of its small-town elements — main street, churches, schools, post office, library, railroad station, green spaces — after being absorbed into the NYC grid more than 100 years ago. We’ll talk a bit about Woodlawn’s role in a Revolutionary War skirmish, its history as one of the Bronx’s “Irishtowns”, and its connection to NYC’s 19th-century aqueduct projects. But mostly we’ll walk across a portion of Woodlawn’s predominantly residential streets to illustrate how Jane Jacob’s philosophy of “well-used” city streets and sidewalks have preserved Woodlawn as a stable, safe, thriving urban neighborhood. We’ll end at a local venue for refreshments and conversation.

This walk will explore the neighborhood that sits at the edge of the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights, and, at appropriate sites, discussions will examine different elements of Jane Jacobs’ ideas which have transformed our thinking about cities. Walkers will explore these ideas in the context of this neighborhood’s history and how it developed.

The area of Oakland we will be visiting was developed in the 1860s and 1870s, shortly after the transcontinental railroad was completed and Oakland was designated the western terminus. George Pardee’s father Enoch was a doctor in the Gold Rush era. George served as California’s governor from 1903 to 1907. Family members donated the home and belongings to a foundation and it is periodically open to the public for teas and tours.

Oakland is hosting the annual California Preservation Foundation statewide conference May 3-6 at the Oakland Marriott & Convention Center. It is also the city’s birthday (160th)on May 4th. Our Jane’s Walk will be taking place on the final day of the conference, and many conference attendees are expected to attend. The public is also cordially invited to take part. The Oakland Tours Program is sponsored by the city’s Cultural Arts & Marketing Department.

Route: This walk leaves from the Oakland Marriott Hotel main lobby (1001 Broadway) and goes through the National Register listed Old Oakland Historic District to the home belonging to California governor George Pardee and his family, which was built in 1868. The home, located at 672 11th St. (approximately 6 blocks from the Marriott) will be open for guided tours on the day of the Jane’s Walk.

From the 1870s to about 1910, the Tenderloin was Manhattan’s most famous red-light district, a cradle of elegant vice that developed north of 23rd Street west of Fifth Avenue, in the shadow of luxurious hotels such as Gilsey House. High-stakes gambling parlors, brothels, saloons, dance halls – the Tenderloin reveled in its own illegality, until pressure from civic authorities and corporate development led to its demise. Since the 1990s, zoning changes have altered the landscape of the old Tenderloin’s main stem – Sixth Avenue – and have led to the destruction of many buildings. But a few reminders survive. On this tour, we will visit sites associated with still-visible Tenderloin businesses, including the block of 28th St. once known as Tin Pan Alley, birthplace of the pop music industry.
